Havelis & Mosques – Ahmedabad old city

Sangeetha was in Ahmedabad during the weekend of 26th & 27th June 2010. That weekend, we took some time off to visit a couple of places in and around Ahmedabad. After covering Adalaj, Modhera, Patan and Sidhpur on the 26th (That is a seperate travelogue), we went around to see a few places in Ahmedabad old city on the 27th. Since the old city is a maze of narrow lanes and most of the important places are within a relatively smaller area, we decided to cover the places by auto and some walking around.
The first place we went to was the ‘Tankshal ni haveli’.
I had seen photos of this haveli in a newspaper article a few months ago and had been trying to track down the exact location. Finally managed to figure out the address and we landed up in Kalupur that morning.
Waiting for the guy with the keys to the haveli to open it up for us…

The USP of this haveli is that it is probably the one that has the longest wooden facade among the numerous wooden haveli’s of Ahmedabad.

It was renovated and was being used as a school till recently…

Very intricate woodwork…

The previous owner of the Haveli…

Old city has a number of shops selling all sorts of colourful laces and stuff…

Next stop was the Jami masjid…

The Badshah’s Hazira was our next stop…

Then came the Rani Ki Hazira of course

Looks like the place is in private possession and they have turned into a utility and storage area. Not worth visiting anyway.

Contd…
